What is the Best Toothpaste?
Going through the toothpaste isle at any store is confusing and overwhelming for most people. Every toothpaste claims to be the best with dazzling names and promises of whiter teeth.
Don't be afraid-there is a toothpaste that is right for you!
When looking at all the different toothpastes it is important to choose one that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. If you see the ADA seal then you are choosing a toothpaste that must meet the ADA’s requirements for safety and effectiveness in reducing tooth decay. Once you find a toothpaste with the seal of approval, the rest of the choices depend on personal preference such as flavor or gel versus paste.
It is important to know that if you experience general hot or cold sensitivity on a regular basis or if you have ever been told your gums are receding, it may be best to avoid toothpastes that claim to be ‘whitening toothpastes’. These toothpastes often contain more abrasives and can actually increase the sensitivity of your teeth. The abrasives in these toothpastes can also wear away exposed root surfaces in areas of gum recession. Therefore, if you have sensitivity issues or recession it is best to look for a plain gel or paste that does not claim to be a 'whitening toothpaste'.
