HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus and it is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States. Infection with HPV increases your risk of developing cervical cancer and oropharyngeal cancer which affects the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue.
Recently the rate of mouth and throat cancers has increased at an alarming rate in a younger group of patients. Scientist have contributed this to an increase in oral sex practices of younger kids/ young adults than in previous decades.
The good news is most patients with HPV associated oral cancers respond well to treatment and have excellent cure rates. Of course the best defense is prevention. Abstaining from oral sex/sex is the best prevention. There are also two options for vaccines at this time. The CDC has recently recommended vaccinations for all adolescent girls and now adolescent boys and young men.
If you have more questions about HPV or HPV Vaccine consult with your physician or dentist and be sure and discuss this risk with your children!
